Evaluation

I enjoyed making the video and editing it but if i could start again there is a few things i would change. For example i would have recorded it in a diffrent area like infront of a window in a media class because they are high up so their is a good view from them. I also would have added a song to the video to improve it as the sound of the actors laughing isnt what i expected it to be like since i wanted it to be constant.

I'm glad i chose to film the people in my meda class because, i wanted to exibit it in college so they would be able to see the final piece. The purpose of my film was to show that people laugh at different things and that eveyone does laugh, i think i got this point across once i had exibited it.
I think one of the things that was bad about this video is there isnt as many clips of things that make people laugh as i would of wanted there to be.
Overall i think my video is good for a first attempt and i will be more confident to do another film, because i am more confident with using the video camera and editing my clips.
Production
When i had set up the camera in the right position i needed to go around to ask the students in my class to participate in the video, but it wasn't that easy because, they didn't want to be in the video or couldn't be bovered. However once the first few people did it others agreed. For the end scene of my video i asked students from the second year to be in my video as well so the group would be bigger.
When i was filming Martin dancing i had hoped that i could record three people dancing but one was absent and the other felt embarrassed. I felt annoyed but during the filming Martin pulled Zoyia into the shot so it turned out better than i expected and it also made it more humorous!
Post Production
When i was editing i didn't have a clear idea of what i wanted it to be like. My original plan was to have people laughing in slow motion but when i tried that the sound got deeper, so they sounded like giants and it looked really bad too! Once i looked through the options of diffrent things i could put in the video, i started to get a picture in my mind of what i wanted it to be like. I didnt want the video to be the same throughout so every scene is different, as they all change from one scene to the next in different ways.
When i had finished editing i watched it over and over again and still wasn't 100% sure about it. I added in some text and somehow it made it much better!
Exibition
I didnt want to change the room about when i was exibiting my video, because i wanted it to be the same as it always is and have media students in there to watch the video. Everyone was sat at the desks facing toward the screen where the film would be projected. I was so glad that people were laughing at the video when they watched it! I was hoping that the dancing would make them laugh the most, and it did!
I handed out questionairres for people who watched it to say what they thought about, its good points and bad and what they would give it out of 10. Most people said it made them laugh and said that they would have liked it to be longer. I think it makes people feel better once they watched it because they were all smilling at the end of it which is a plus!

Diary

I started off setting up the camera on a tri-pod near the stairs on the fourth floor (media department) facing towards the wall. I got the actors to stand infront of the camera, facing their back to the wall so the background would be a plain colour. I regret having the wall in the background because it makes the video look dull because of the colour of it. I shot the people laughing in any order to what i planned because, if i didn't like it, i could change the order when i edit it.
When i was editing my video it seemed to be a bit boring so i put some words in before some clips for example before the actor 'Martin' starts dancing i added something like 'even the most unexpected things can make us laugh!' This improved my video a lot more.
When i exibited my video, everything was where i wanted it to be, and i got quite good feedback from the questionairres.

Exibition/ installation plan

I showed my movie in a class room in college in the media department because that is where i recorded my film and its were the media students will be so they can watch it when i exibit it. I projected it up onto the white board to make the picture much bigger so everyone can se.

Above is a diagrame of my layout/plan.

The use of exibition space to create meaning

Dominique Gonzalez's - Foesters, this exhibition was on the fist floor, the entrance of this was green and red strips of plastic hangigng from a low roof. The idea of this was to show what London would look like in fifty years in a shelter for the people to go in to, to get out of the rain. It shows how animals will grow much bigger and evolve dramatically. The large roof and floor area give a sense that everything is much more bigger and the fact that all the over grown insects tower over people is slightly intimidating. The amount of bunk beds in this area represent thousands of people taking shelter of the disaster.

instilation place

Time: 12:00pm
Date: December 08
Location: In college in the media department

I have chosen to exhibit my video in college because the people i have used for my video are the media students so they will want to see how the final piece turned out also, i can then project it onto a bigger screen so everyone will be able to see it! I will tell the students and teachers to come to the media department at lunch so they can view it and therefore i can ask them for feedback on my video.

I have chosen to exhibit my video at 12:00pm because that will be the time students will be on their lunch break, so they will be able to watch it in their free time. I haven't got an exact date to show it yet, because i don't know exactly when it will be complete but it will be in December.

Audience and audience interpretations of the work

Peoples reactions to these videos would all be different, since the point to experimental video is to make people react or feel in a certain way, whether they are the same or not. I think it is important for viewers to see the videos in there own independent ways and to not all think the same thing, as that is the reason for experimental video. The most important thing is that the viewers have been affected by it in the appropriate way, which is what the creator would want. People in the group had different concepts of the film koyanisqatsi, which shows different images of places in the world, different affects humans have on it and how beautiful the world is in some parts. Some of the group thought it was boring and didn't interest them and others thought it was clever and captured great images of the world and understood more about what the film was made for.

How these works might inspire your own

These pieces of work have insipred me for my own piece because they show all sorts of techniques and the difference between old and modern technology. I was mostley inspired by the film 'Doll face', it was very modern and it wasnt boring as it made the audience want to watch more. I also enjoyed the film made by a college student because it was very cleverly done and sounded great! I would like my piece to be as good as these two films, i would like it to be modern and different! My film is going to be filmed using close ups, because im concentrating on the objects that are making the sound. I will want to use slow motion affects in my video to make it more dramatic.

Narrative and non-narrative structures

The film the girl chewing gum has no beginning, middle or end, throughout the whole film it shows people walking past in a busy street and at the end it shows an empty field. This is the same as 1001 nights which just shows women talking about their experiences. Doll face has a beginning middle and end because at the beginning we see the robot arm growing and see a woman’s face on it, then we watch her copy the face on a television by putting make up on, then the TV moves away and the robot is so desperate to be like what it sees that the arm ends up breaking. Koyanisqatsi has a different structure as it has a beginning middle and end but more to it!
1001 nights is an example of non traditional narrative because unlike Koyannisqatsi which is narrative showing a beggining middle and end using the film itself 12001 nights is narrative by the structure e.g the women talk from left to right one at a time, but in Koyannisqatsi we can clearly tell the start and finish. It uses the cave drawing to open the film and it also ends the film with the camera zooming away from the cave drawings.

Use of technology, techniques and styles

In the girl chewing gum, by john smith the voice of the director has been added in to the film to make it sound like he is on the set, but in a film like 1001 nights you cannot hear the director, Janane Al Ani’s voice, all we hear is the women telling their stories. The similarities of both these films are that there doesn’t seem to be a begging middle or an end and there isn’t really a point to both stories. The differences of the films is that, the movie ‘the girl chewing gum’ is made using a regular black and white camera because there was no computer technology around at this time, whereas the film ‘1001 nights’ has been made using more modern technology because the women have been put into the same picture and paused when they have finish talking. Doll Face is a good example of modern technology because it uses computer graphics to create the robot arm and add the real woman’s face onto it. This film shows us how people want to be like what they see in the media and will do a lot to be like that, but they will never be able to be exactly the same. This is shown at the end of the film when the robot arm breaks.

Discuss both past and current artists.

The films the girl chewing gum and telling lies are similar because they are both non digetic since you can't see where the sound is coming from (the people talking). The difference between them is that you can see black and white movie clips in the girl chewing gum but on telling lies you can only see words appearing on the screen in different colours over a black back ground. They both rely on the dialogue for the audience to understand the concept of the film. The film Koyannisqatsi is similar to The girl chewing gum because the camera concentrates on what the people in the scenery are doing. 1001 nights is another clip that relies on dialogue because the women don't move when they are telling there own stories.

Also Koyannisqatsi and 1001 nights aqre very similar because they both include some influene of war or trouble in thier concepts of film. For example Koyannisqwatsi opens with ther camera following a pice of debris from an explosion and in 1001 nightws all of the woman talk about an experience or memory they have had in some type of war experience. They booth incoporate some sort of fear or violence.

Experimental video by a college student

We watched an experimental video made by a student at the college, which was different sounds made by hitting things and peoples voices, put together to make a beat. I thought it was very cleaver how they did it because it sounded great and was made by so many noises! Some of the sounds were hitting a wall, humming, clapping and coughing. The video had images as well as sound, even if the sound was very quick it would still show the clip. The sound in this video is digetic as we can see the source of the noise
At the end of the film it says that we should appreciate the noises because we hear them every day, which i thought was a good ending to the video.

Koyaanisquatsi

This is a film by Godfrey Reggio. It starts by the camera zooming out of cave drawings of people, followed by a explosion of fire. For the beginning of the film it shows different camera views of rothat have been destroyed.
After the wars, demolition takes place on the high rise flats, then new buildings are shown and busy places which shows us the opposite of what we just saw! In the night of the city lots of electricity is being used by people turning lights in their houses on and the billboard lights.
Next it changes to the manufacture of clothes, cars, electrical equipment and food. Different types of entertainment and leisure such as shopping, the arcade, cinema, bowling and going out to eat are shown.
Then lots of people are being shown, showing different emotions e.g sad, happy, lonely, tired, bored etc. A rocket is recorded taking of and then unexpectedly it explodes! Right at the end we go back to the begging of the movie and see cave drawings again!
cky mountains, caves, rivers and trees. It looks deserted and empty like a desert. In side a cave we can see bats flying around as they fly into the light beaming into the rock. The scenery changes to the sky with white clouds floating by, then onto waterfalls and oceans. The speed of the film speeds up as it travels towards a flat peak of a mountain. Then suddenly we see another
explosion!
Every thing becomes very different because now we see man made things e.g factories, power stations, pylons, lorries. And there are men working with them. Again it shows another huge explosion! We then see different transports like cars and airplanes. Next we see what is used in wars, tanks, bombs, air force planes, rockets, ground to air missile, aircraft carrier. We also see lots more explosions and the destruction the war has caused. There are ghost town and derelict houses and flats
The music is very important in this film due to there being no dialogue. Overall this film was impressive because of all the different images of the world shown and how humans have destroyed something that was ALL beautiful once!

Craft and Concept

Craft- Crafted videos are well choreographed and use different sounds and effects in the video. It is the way something is made, the tools and techniques used when making a piece of art of a film. An artist's painting or sculpture is an example of craft because, they have made the art piece themselves.
Concept- An example of this would be photography. For example if the photographer positioned an apple on a table and took a photo of it this would be more concept than craft because the photographer did not make the apple or the table, but they did came up with the idea behind the piece.

The girl chewing gum

This film is 9 minutes long.
It is a recording of a street with people walking past going about their every day lives, whilst a man is shouting out what the people are doing before they actually do it! It sounds as if the man is the director and the people are doing what he says.
The sound is non digetic because we cant see the man talking, but it is also digetic as we can see the cars and people on the screen making noise!
Overall i thought the film was very boring, because nothing interesting happened and it is in black and white!

Telling Lies

Telling Lies is a short film made by Simon Ellis and it is 4 minutes and 9 seconds long.
The back ground throughout the whole film is black and only words appear on the screen instead of pictures or video clips! The words appear in different colours and font sizes, for example if someone is shouting the font size is bigger.
The sound in this film is non digetic because you can not see who is talking and you cant see the phone when it rings.
The words that appear on the screen are different from the words that are being spoken because it shows the viewer what the person wants to say, hence the title 'Telling lies'. This basically tells us that all people tell white lies!
This film could be improved by making the writing more clear because sometimes it is very difficult to read it! Also it sometimes shows the words too quick and you cant finish reading what it says!
Overall i thought this film was very good, it could do with improving but its very humorous and i enjoyed watching it!

Brighton Trip

I took this photo because this couple were the only people on the sea front and it makes a nice picture of two people sitting together on the beach. I think that this photo would look nicer in black and white to make it look more professional.

Brighton Trip

I wanted to take a picture of the west pier but it looked boring on its own, so i moved some deck chairs forward to get them in the foreground of the photo so it looks like the west pier is in the background. I took this picture because when i think of the seaside i think of Brighton beach and the pier, because its a popular British coast, and known for its piers.

Experimental video

Experimental video to me means experimenting with photography, animation, video and voice record to see which one works best in the video you are creating. Experimental video, video art, electronic art, alternative TV, community video, guerrilla television, computer art: these are a few of the labels that have been applied to a body of work that began to emerge in the United States in the l960s. Arguably, the most important of these labels is "experimental." The dominant goal of this video movement over the past 30 years has been change, achieved through the strategy of experimentation. The consistent target for this change has been television--commercially supported, network broadcast, mainstream television--whose success with mass audiences was the result of the repetition of proven formulas rather than aesthetic, ideological or industrial innovation or experimentation. It is perhaps commercial television's ability to interpret the uncertain world within the context of familiar conventions that makes it an essential part of everyday life in America. And it is this body of familiar interpretations that became the challenge of experimental video artists. http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/E/htmlE/experimental/experimental.htm
